You want to put RMU, SIMS, FJMU, NMU, QAMC and Sahiwal Medical College in order, and you will live in a hostel whichever of them you join.

That changes everything. When you will live in a hostel whichever college you join, your hometown no longer decides your list. You are comparing the colleges themselves. This guide gives ePrepare’s suggested order, the 2025-26 numbers for each college, and the UHS rules that turn your list into an admission.

ePrepare’s suggested order if you will live in a hostel: 1. RMU, 2. SIMS, 3. NMU, 4. QAMC, 5. FJMU, 6. Sahiwal. FJMU admits only female students, so male students simply drop it: RMU, SIMS, NMU, QAMC, Sahiwal. This is ePrepare’s suggestion, not an official ranking. Adjust it for your own city, family and safety.

The six colleges by the numbers

Merit figures are from the UHS 2025-26 final open-merit list. Total seats are from the UHS prospectus for session 2025-26. Colleges are listed in ePrepare’s suggested order.

2025-26 final open-merit list: closing aggregate and seats
OrderCollegeCityClosing aggregateOpen-merit seats filledTotal MBBS seats
1Rawalpindi Medical University (RMU)Rawalpindi93.9263%325350
2Services Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS)Lahore94.2273%211220
3Nishtar Medical University (NMU)Multan94.1455%268300
4Quaid-e-Azam Medical College (QAMC)Bahawalpur93.7182%299325
5Fatima Jinnah Medical University (FJMU), women onlyLahore93.8136%284300
6Sahiwal Medical College (SLMC)Sahiwal93.6606%94120

Closing aggregate = the lowest open-merit aggregate admitted to that college in the 2025-26 final list. On the UHS seat list, RMU, NMU and FJMU appear under their constituent colleges: Rawalpindi Medical College, Nishtar Medical College and Fatima Jinnah Medical College. See every Punjab college on our UHS closing merit page.

Notice that this order is not a merit ranking. SIMS and NMU closed above RMU in 2025-26, and FJMU closed above QAMC. A preference list says where you would most like to study. UHS then places you in the highest college on your list that your merit reaches.

What the prospectus says about each college

RMU, NMU and FJMU are medical universities. SIMS, QAMC and Sahiwal are colleges. All six are public-sector institutions admitting through UHS.

FJMU is for female students only

The prospectus states that all institutions are co-educational except Fatima Jinnah Medical College, Lahore, where only female students are admitted. This matches the prospectus example of 16 open-merit colleges to rank for female candidates and 15 for male candidates. If you are a male student, remove FJMU and keep the rest of the order the same.

A hostel warning about SIMS

For a student who will definitely live in a hostel, this matters. The prospectus says SIMS hostel facilities are very limited, managed through some rented buildings plus a few at the institute, with allotment according to the institute’s own procedures. ePrepare still places SIMS second, but before you finalise, check with SIMS how hostel allotment works for new students. If a guaranteed college hostel matters more to you than Lahore, you may reasonably move SIMS lower.

Adjust the order for your own situation

ePrepare’s order assumes hometown does not matter because you will be in a hostel anyway. Real life is rarely that neat. As general advice, think about:

  • Distance from home. Even if you live in a hostel, a city two hours away means more weekends home than one eight hours away.
  • Relatives nearby. Family in Multan or Bahawalpur can make a big difference in an emergency.
  • Safety and comfort. Your parents’ peace of mind is a valid reason to move a college up or down.
  • Weather and lifestyle. Five years is long; choose a city you can actually live in.

How the UHS preference list works

These rules are from the UHS prospectus for session 2025-26.

  1. You must rank every college for your seat category, not just these six. The 2025-26 prospectus gave the open-merit example of 16 medical colleges for female candidates and 15 for male candidates.
  2. You are assessed in your order. If your first choice has been filled by candidates higher in merit, you are considered for your next choice, and so on.
  3. The order locks at the deadline. It can be edited until the closing time on the last date of application. After that, no changes are accepted, and the same order is used for every selection list that session.
  4. Upgradation is compulsory. If you joined a college in an earlier list and a seat opens in a college you ranked higher, you are moved there. Staying where you are, down-gradation and mutual transfers are not allowed.

So only rank a college above another if you would genuinely rather study there. Ranking a higher-merit college first never costs you the colleges below it. For the wider admission rules, read our UHS Punjab MBBS admission policy guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can male students apply to FJMU?

No. The prospectus says only female students are admitted to Fatima Jinnah Medical College, Lahore. Male students should use RMU, SIMS, NMU, QAMC, Sahiwal.

Do I only list these six colleges?

No. UHS requires you to rank all colleges for your seat category. Place these six in your chosen order, then rank the remaining colleges around them.

Why is SIMS above NMU when NMU has its own hospital and more hostels?

This is ePrepare’s suggestion, not a fact about which college is better. If hostel certainty or Multan suits you more, moving NMU above SIMS is a perfectly reasonable choice.

If I am upgraded from QAMC to RMU, can I refuse?

No. Upgradation to a college you ranked higher is compulsory once you have joined a college. Decide your order before the deadline.

Will these closing aggregates repeat this year?

No one can promise that. Closing merits change every year, so treat 2025-26 as a guide only.
