Every year, parents of daughters who want to become doctors ask us the same two questions. Are there MBBS seats in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa just for girls? And can a girl get a seat at Khyber Medical College or Ayub Medical College, or only at Khyber Girls Medical College? The answers matter, because a girl who lists only one college can lose a seat her merit had already earned.
This guide answers both questions using KMU's latest admission policy for public sector medical and dental colleges, published on the KMU admission portal, and the official website of Khyber Girls Medical College. It covers every seat at Khyber Girls Medical College (KGMC), the seats girls can compete for in the other twelve public colleges, last year's closing merit, the fee, and how to plan your preference list.
The short answer: KMU's policy does not reserve seats by gender. Girls compete for every seat in all 13 public colleges on exactly the same merit as boys: 739 open merit MBBS seats and 154 open merit BDS seats, plus every reserved category they qualify for. On top of that, Khyber Girls Medical College, Peshawar, the province's first public sector medical college for girls, has 150 sanctioned MBBS seats (89 of them open merit) that only girls take. In KMU's latest final merit list, KGMC's open merit seats closed at 93.8899, the third highest among the nine public medical colleges.
Girls can apply to every KMU public college
KMU's admission policy splits seats by category: open merit, self-finance, Merged Districts, backward areas, special abilities and so on. It never splits them by gender. There is no "girls' quota" at Khyber Medical College, Ayub Medical College or any other public college, and there is no limit on how many girls a college can admit. If a girl's aggregate is higher than a boy's, she is placed above him on the same merit list.
This works through merit-cum-choice. KMU ranks every applicant in a category by aggregate (10% Matric, 40% FSc, 50% MDCAT) and gives each student the highest college on her own preference list that still has a seat. The policy is strict about one thing: "If a college is not mentioned in his/her preferences, admission shall not be offered in that particular college." Khyber Girls Medical College at a glance
KGMC's own website describes it as "the 1st Public Sector Medical College for girls in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa". It began as a girls' campus of Khyber Medical College, Peshawar, in the PDA Building, Hayatabad, and later became a separate college. According to the college, Hayatabad Medical Complex was declared its teaching hospital by a Health Department notification, and KGMC describes it as "a tertiary care hospital consisting of 642 beds", a short distance from the college. Admission to KGMC's MBBS seats is made through KMU, on the same online form and merit lists as every other public college.

The policy also lists 7 additional foreign seats at KGMC that are over and above the 150, which brings the college's grand total to 157. KGMC has no seats for special abilities, minorities, AJK, Gilgit-Baltistan or overseas Pakistanis (OPF); girls in those categories compete for seats at the other colleges. Merged Districts seats at KGMC
KGMC has 38 of the 290 Merged Districts seats in KP's public colleges, the second highest after Khyber Medical College. Each seat belongs to one district, and a girl competes only with other girls of her own district for KGMC's share.

Backward area seats at KGMC
KGMC has 3 backward area seats: 1 for Dir Upper and 2 listed as "Combined Backward Areas". The policy does not name one area for the combined seats, so they read as seats for eligible candidates from the backward areas together; confirm the exact pool in KMU's merit list notice. The usual backward area rules apply: your and your father's domicile of that area, schooling from class 1 to FSc inside it, a location certificate verified by the DEO and countersigned by the Deputy Commissioner, and a five-year service bond. How competitive is KGMC?
In KMU's latest final merit list, KGMC's open merit seats closed at 93.8899, behind only Khyber Medical College (94.7727) and Ayub Medical College (94.1909). Its self-finance seats closed at 92.9162, a gap of 0.97 aggregate, which is about three to four MDCAT marks out of 180.
What this means in practice: a girl whose aggregate is a little below KGMC's closing can still get an open merit seat at Bacha Khan, Saidu, Nowshera, Gajju Khan, Gomal or Bannu Medical College, but only if she lists them. In a strong year the order can change, so don't assume any college is "safe".
Fee at KGMC
KGMC is one of the three colleges (with KMC and AMC) that pay the higher rate in KMU's fee schedule.

Hostel
KGMC's website has a hostel page. It says residency is offered to deserving students subject to the availability of seats, and that students apply to the college's Provost on the prescribed form. Hostel space can be limited, so if you are from outside Peshawar, check KGMC's current hostel notice as soon as you are selected. Hostel arrangements at the other colleges are set by each college, not by KMU's policy.
How girls should plan their KMU application
- List KGMC and the co-educational colleges. Put the colleges in the order you would really choose them. A girl who would happily study at Saidu or Nowshera should list them; otherwise she can't be offered them.
- Think about BDS too. Medical and dental are separate applications. If you would accept BDS, apply for it as well; all four public dental colleges are open to girls.
- Apply in every category you qualify for: open merit plus self-finance, Merged Districts or backward areas. Each category has its own merit list.
- Keep your documents ready before KMU's advertisement: your and your father's domicile, DMCs and CNIC or Form B. Use our KMU documents checklist.
- Bring a parent or guardian. The policy says "The parent(s) or legal guardians must accompany all the candidates at the time of placement interview."
- Pay within three working days of your offer letter, then watch later lists for upgrades. Your fee moves with you without any deduction.
