Thousands of students in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa take a second shot every year. Some improve their FSc marks through their board, some sit the MDCAT again, and some do both. The work is hard, so the last thing you want is to find out that your better marks did not count because of a date or a rule nobody told you about.

This guide explains exactly what Khyber Medical University (KMU) counts for improvers and repeaters applying to public sector MBBS and BDS seats in KP. It is based on KMU's latest admission policy for public sector medical and dental colleges, published on the KMU admission portal, and we quote the policy word for word wherever a rule decides whether your marks count.

The short answer: KMU uses the results you submit on its online form, and nothing can be changed after you submit. An improved FSc result counts only if your board declares it and issues the certificate before KMU's closing date; a result declared after the closing date is not considered. An MDCAT result is valid across Pakistan for three years, and there is no age limit. The policy does not mention any deduction of marks for improvers. For students who passed HSSC in 2021, a court judgment means only elective science subjects count, unless they later improved, in which case their revised total counts.

What KMU counts for improvers and repeaters, six rules from the policy: improved FSc marks count for merit if the board declares the result before KMU's closing date; a revised result or improved marks declared after the closing date are not considered; an MDCAT result is valid for the entire country for three years; domicile, DMCs and other certificates cannot be changed once submitted on the portal; there is no lower or upper age limit for public sector colleges of KP; candidates for Merged Districts reserved seats must attach attempt certificates
The six rules in KMU's policy that decide whether your new marks help you.

Who this guide is for

  • FSc improvers: you passed HSSC (FSc pre-medical or equivalent) and are sitting your board's exam again to raise your marks.
  • MDCAT repeaters: you have taken the MDCAT before and are taking it again for a better score.
  • Both: you are improving FSc and repeating the MDCAT in the same season.
  • Older candidates: you finished FSc some years ago and are wondering whether age or an old result stops you.

If you are still deciding whether to repeat at all, read our MDCAT repeaters guide first. This page is about the admission rules once you have decided.

Rule 1: Improved FSc marks count, if they are declared in time

KMU calculates your aggregate from the marks certificates you upload with the online form. If your board has declared your improved result and issued the new detailed marks certificate (DMC) by then, you upload the improved DMC and that is what counts. The policy sets the cut-off clearly in two places. Its general notes say:

"Any certificate issued after the closing date for admission, shall not be considered for the purpose of calculation of merit."

And its warnings section adds:

"All the above-mentioned certificates issued after the dates fixed for receipt of application forms shall not be entertained."

So the date that matters is the date your board declares the result and issues the certificate, not the date you sat the improvement paper. If your improvement exam is still being marked on KMU's closing date, those marks will not be used in that admission.

Timing decides whether improved marks count: you sit the improvement exam, the board declares the result and issues a new DMC, then KMU's closing date, then merit lists. If the result is declared before the closing date, submit the revised DMC with your form and your revised total marks are used for merit. If it is declared after the closing date, it is not considered for that admission and KMU uses the result you submitted
Your improved result must be declared before KMU's closing date.

Do improvers lose any marks?

Some students have heard that improvers get a deduction. KMU's latest policy for public colleges does not mention any deduction for improved marks. Its merit table lists FSc as "Adjusted marks in FSc or equivalent examination", weighted at 40%, and the only rule it gives about improvement is the one for the 2021 HSSC batch below, which says the revised total is used. If KMU announces anything different in its admission notice, follow the notice.

When do board improvement results come out?

Each board sets its own exam schedule, so we can't give one date for everyone. KP boards, such as the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Peshawar, publish their improvement rules, fees and exam schedules in their own notifications on their websites (for Peshawar, bisep.edu.pk). Check two dates as early as you can: when your board will declare your result, and when KMU's applications close. KMU announces its schedule in national newspapers, on its website and on its Facebook page. Our KMU admission schedule explains the order of steps.

Rule 2: What you submit is final

This is the rule that catches improvers out most often. The policy's warnings section says:

"The domicile, DMC of HSSC (Pre-Medical)/Equivalent Examination, SSC and other certificates once submitted in the online Admission portal cannot be changed and shall be considered as final. Revision of result or improvement of marks declared by the board/IBCC after the closing date of submission of application form."

The second sentence is unfinished in the policy, but read with the rules above, its meaning is clear: a revised result or improved marks declared after the closing date cannot replace what you submitted. In practice:

  • You cannot submit your old DMC and swap in the improved one later.
  • A rechecking result or correction that the board or IBCC declares after the closing date does not change your merit.
  • If your improved result is out before the closing date, upload the improved DMC, not the old one.

Our KMU admission documents checklist lists every certificate you upload.

Rule 3: The special rule for the 2021 HSSC batch

KMU's policy includes one rule that applies to a single batch of students. Under its basic eligibility criteria, it says:

"Only elective science subject's marks shall be used for calculation of merit of those candidates who have passed Higher Secondary School Certificate qualification (HSSC) in 2021 as per Peshawar High Court, Peshawar judgment through W.P # 6015/P/2023 […]. However, if the candidate has subsequently attempted/improved marks, his/her revised result (total marks) shall be considered for calculation of merit."
The special rule for the 2021 HSSC batch from a Peshawar High Court judgment, W.P. 6015/P/2023, quoted in KMU's policy: candidates who passed HSSC in 2021 without improvement have only the marks of the elective science subjects used for merit; candidates who improved or attempted again later have their revised total marks used. Every other HSSC batch: FSc or equivalent marks count at 40% of the aggregate in the normal way
One rule for one batch: the 2021 HSSC candidates.

In plain words:

  • If you passed HSSC in 2021 and have not improved since, KMU uses only your elective science subjects to work out the FSc part of your merit.
  • If you passed HSSC in 2021 and later improved or sat the exam again, KMU uses your revised result, meaning your total marks.
  • If you passed HSSC in any other year, this rule does not apply to you; your FSc or equivalent marks count in the normal way.

The policy does not explain exactly how the elective subjects are converted into a percentage. If you are in this batch, read KMU's admission notice carefully and ask KMU's admission office if your marks look wrong on the merit list. You can object in writing before the placement interviews; our guide to KMU merit lists explains how.

Rule 4: Your MDCAT result is valid for three years

The policy says: "MDCAT result of one province shall be valid for the entire country and shall be valid for a period of three years." That gives repeaters two clear facts:

  • Where you sat it does not matter. An MDCAT taken in another province is accepted for KMU's public colleges.
  • A result stays usable for three years. If you sat the MDCAT one or two years ago, that result can still be used.

What the policy does not say is how KMU treats a candidate with two or more valid MDCAT results, for example whether you choose one, or whether KMU takes the latest or the highest. It simply doesn't address it. When you fill in the form, read the MDCAT section carefully and enter the result the form asks for. If the form lets you choose, check the instructions before you submit, because you cannot change it afterwards.

The minimum MDCAT score is the same for everyone, first attempt or fifth: 55% for MBBS and 50% for BDS. See MDCAT passing marks for what that means on the current paper out of 180.

Rule 5: There is no age limit

The policy says: "There is no lower or upper age limit for admission in public sector Medical/Dental colleges of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa." Taking a gap year, or several, does not stop you from applying. Age even works slightly in your favour in one situation: if two candidates are tied on merit, "the older in age candidate will be preferred over younger one". If the tie continues, higher Matric marks decide, then higher entrance test marks.

Rule 6: Attempt certificates for Merged Districts seats

If you are applying for Merged Districts (ex-FATA) reserved seats, the policy lists "Attempt certificate(s)" among the requirements. Keep the certificates for every exam you have sat, including improvement attempts, and upload them with your form. The full requirements are in our guide to Merged Districts MBBS and BDS seats.

Is it better to improve FSc or repeat the MDCAT?

That depends on your marks, but the aggregate formula makes the trade-off easy to see. KMU's merit is 10% Matric, 40% FSc and 50% MDCAT, each first turned into a percentage of its own total.

What one extra mark is worth in the KMU aggregate, with Matric and FSc out of 1,100 and MDCAT out of 180: one MDCAT mark is worth 0.278 aggregate, one FSc mark 0.036 and one Matric mark 0.009. Ten FSc marks are about 0.36 aggregate, the same as one to two MDCAT marks; five MDCAT marks are about 1.39 aggregate
One MDCAT mark is worth almost eight FSc marks in the aggregate.
Extra marksOut ofAggregate gained
1 MDCAT mark1800.278
10 FSc marks1,1000.364
25 FSc marks1,1000.909
50 FSc marks1,1001.818
10 Matric marks1,1000.091

If your board's total is different, for example 1,200, each FSc mark is worth a little less (about 0.033). Two practical lessons:

  • Improving FSc is worth it when the jump is large. Fifty extra FSc marks add about 1.8 aggregate, roughly six or seven MDCAT marks. A small improvement of 10 marks adds about as much as one or two MDCAT marks.
  • The MDCAT moves your aggregate fastest. Each MDCAT mark is worth nearly eight FSc marks. If you can only do one thing well, a better MDCAT score usually helps more.

Try your own numbers in our aggregate calculator, then compare with the KMU closing merit for the colleges you want.

An improver's checklist

  1. Find your board's result date for the improvement exam, and compare it with KMU's closing date as soon as KMU advertises.
  2. Collect the improved DMC as soon as it is issued, before the closing date.
  3. Upload the right documents: the improved DMC if you have it, plus every other certificate. Nothing can be swapped later.
  4. Keep attempt certificates if you are applying for Merged Districts seats.
  5. Enter your MDCAT result carefully, following the form's instructions.
  6. Check your merit on the first list and object in writing to the Chairman of KMU's Admission Committee if your marks are wrong.
  7. Apply in every category you qualify for, and list every college you would accept. See every KMU quota and reserved seat.

Frequently asked questions

Does KMU accept improved FSc marks?

Yes, if your board declares the improved result and issues the certificate before KMU's closing date, and you submit it with your form. Certificates issued after the closing date are not considered for merit.

Does KMU deduct marks for improvers?

KMU's latest policy for public sector colleges does not mention any deduction for improved marks. It uses the marks on the certificates you submit. Follow KMU's admission notice if it announces anything different.

My improvement result came after I submitted the form. Can I update it?

No. The policy says certificates submitted on the online portal cannot be changed and are treated as final, and a revised result or improved marks declared after the closing date are not considered.

How long is my MDCAT result valid for KMU admission?

Three years. The policy says an MDCAT result of one province is valid for the entire country for three years.

I have two valid MDCAT results. Which one does KMU use?

The policy doesn't say. Follow the instructions on KMU's online form for the MDCAT section, and ask KMU's admission office before the closing date if they are unclear, because you cannot change your entry later.

Is there an age limit for MBBS in KP public colleges?

No. KMU's policy says there is no lower or upper age limit. If two candidates are tied on merit, the older one is placed higher.

I passed HSSC in 2021. How is my merit calculated?

Under a Peshawar High Court judgment quoted in the policy, only your elective science subjects are used, unless you later improved or attempted again, in which case your revised total marks are used.

Should I improve FSc or repeat the MDCAT?

Each MDCAT mark is worth about 0.28 aggregate, while each FSc mark out of 1,100 is worth about 0.036. A big FSc improvement can help, but the MDCAT usually moves your merit faster. Many students do both if the board's result will be out before KMU's closing date.

A second attempt is a real chance to change your result, as long as you plan around the dates. If you are repeating the MDCAT, prepare with ePrepare: KPK textbook MCQs, full-length papers and a predicted score that shows how far each extra mark takes you.
