After the MDCAT, every KP student asks the same questions. When will KMU open admissions? When do the merit lists come out? How long do I have to pay the fee? When do classes start? The exact dates change every year, but the order of steps and the fixed deadlines are written into Khyber Medical University's admission policy.

This guide walks through the whole KMU admission cycle for public sector MBBS and BDS seats. It is based on KMU's latest admission policy: from the day the rules are announced to your first week of classes, with the deadlines that never move and what you should be doing at each stage. Keep it bookmarked through the season.

The short answer: KMU announces its criteria by 1 August. After the MDCAT result, it advertises admissions in newspapers, on its website and on Facebook, and you apply online at cas.kmu.edu.pk. KMU then shows a merit list for each category, interviews candidates on merit-cum-choice, and runs at least three merit lists. You must pay the fee within three working days of your offer. Open merit MBBS must finish by 31 December, special category MBBS by 10 January, open merit BDS by 15 February and special category BDS by 28 February. The final list of admitted students is made public by 28 February.

Exact dates are announced every year

KMU's policy fixes the order of the process and some hard deadlines. It does not fix every date. The last date to apply, the merit list dates and the fee deposit dates are announced each year in KMU's admission advertisement. The policy promises that the advertisement “shall clearly mention the last date of submission of applications, dates of display of merit lists and date of deposit of fee for open merit and self-finance and other quota/reserved seats.”

So treat this page as your map, and KMU's advertisement as the exact timetable. Where we give a fixed date below, it comes straight from the policy.

The KMU admission process, step by step

Step 1: Criteria and seat categories announced (by 1 August)

The policy says “The final criteria for merit and admission including all category of seat shall be publicly announced by or before 1st August of each year.” Any public scholarship or funded programme that wants seats in public colleges must also secure them by 1 August. This is when you find out which seat categories exist and how many seats each college has. Read our guide to every KMU quota and reserved seat to see which ones you can apply for.

Step 2: The MDCAT

Admission to every public MBBS and BDS seat in KP needs a pass in the MDCAT conducted by PM&DC: at least 55% for MBBS and 50% for BDS. The policy says the date, time and venue of the test “will be notified in the national daily newspapers”, and that any change will be announced in the press and on the PM&DC and KMU websites and Facebook pages. Your MDCAT result is “valid for the entire country and shall be valid for a period of three years”. If you plan to try again next year, read our MDCAT repeaters guide. Check the latest test news in our MDCAT date and registration guide.

Step 3: KMU's admission advertisement

After the MDCAT, KMU advertises the admission schedule “in the leading national newspapers of wide circulation as well as through its official website and Facebook page.” This advertisement is your real timetable. Note the last date to apply the day it appears, because the policy is clear that “No admission form will be accepted after the due date for submission of forms.”

Step 4: Apply online

You apply at cas.kmu.edu.pk or through kmu.edu.pk. The process is fully online. KMU does not want a hard copy, and forms sent by post or courier are not accepted. Four rules matter at this stage:

  • Medical and dental are separate. “A student having not applied to a given program shall not be entitled to admission to such program.” If you would accept BDS, apply for it too.
  • List every college you would accept. “If a college is not mentioned in his/her preferences, admission shall not be offered in that particular college.”
  • Apply for every category you qualify for. Backward area and special ability candidates must apply for open merit as well as their quota seat to be considered for both, and minority candidates can apply in several categories too. Self-finance is a separate box to tick. Our self-finance vs open merit guide explains that choice.
  • Upload complete documents. Every certificate must be issued before the closing date, and nothing can be changed after you submit. Use our KMU documents checklist before you press submit.

Step 5: Scrutiny of documents

A KMU scrutiny committee, made up of representatives from the public medical and dental colleges and KMU staff, checks the documents of every candidate who applied online. Merged Districts candidates also submit a copy of their form to the Home & Tribal Affairs Department, which verifies their documents, especially the domicile.

Step 6: Merit lists and objections

KMU's admission committee (KMU-AC) “will display a merit list for each category of candidates.” Check your entry carefully: your marks, your category and your name. If something is wrong, you can object in writing to the Chairman KMU-AC, who can correct errors “before the interviews for placement are held”. Then, “The final merit list will be displayed two days before the start of interviews.”

Your merit is your aggregate: 10% Matric, 40% FSc and 50% MDCAT, calculated to five decimal places. If two candidates are equal, the older candidate stands higher. If they are still tied, the one with higher Matric marks goes first, and then the one with higher MDCAT marks. Work out your own figure with our aggregate calculator.

Step 7: Placement interviews

KMU-AC interviews candidates on merit-cum-choice. This means the highest-merit candidate picks first from the colleges in their preference list, then the next, and so on. Interviews cover open merit, backward areas, special quota seats, the reciprocal seat at Nishtar Medical College Multan, general and foreign self-finance seats, Merged Districts seats and overseas Pakistanis' seats. Bring your originals. The policy also says “The parent(s) or legal guardians must accompany all the candidates at the time of placement interview.” Each college's medical board then examines selected candidates.

Step 8: Pay the fee within three working days

This is the deadline that catches families off guard. The policy says “In case of failure to deposit the prescribed admission fee within three working days of receipt of Admission offer letter, their admissions shall stand cancelled”, and such candidates have “no vested right of admission in that year on that particular seat in that particular institute.” Another clause words it as three working days of the placement interview, or as mentioned in the admission office order. Either way, have the first-year fee ready before the interview.

Fees go into a central KMU account. KMU then passes them to your college within 30 days of the third or final merit list. Our KMU fee structure guide lists the exact amount for each college and seat.

Step 9: Second and third merit lists, upgrades and the waiting list

Admissions are completed through “at least three consecutive merit lists”. Seats left empty because selected candidates did not pay in the first or second list go to the next candidates on merit in the third list. If a better college in your preference list opens up, you can be upgraded. In the policy's words, “the fee deposited by upgraded candidates in the previous institution shall be transferred to new institution without any deduction.”

Two rules work against you if you are not careful. You cannot be moved down to a college you already refused. If you did not pay and chose to wait for a higher college, you can still be offered a seat on merit, but never at a college you turned down. Each college's admission committee also publishes a list of vacated or unfilled seats after the placement interviews. The policy gives this deadline as five working days in one clause and three in another, so watch for those lists soon after interviews. Our guide to KMU merit lists, upgrades and the waiting list explains these moves in detail.

Step 10: The deadlines that close admissions

These dates are fixed in the policy every year:

Admissions to open merit seats in Public Sector Medical Colleges of MBBS shall be completed by 31st December, of each year and admissions of Public Sector Dental Colleges shall be completed before 15th February, of each year. Admissions to all special category seats in public medical colleges not being on open merit shall be completed by 10th January of each year. Admissions to all special category seats in public dental colleges not being on open merit shall be completed by 28th February of each year.
KMU admission deadlines fixed every year. MBBS: open merit seats completed by 31 December; special category seats completed by 10 January. BDS: open merit seats completed before 15 February; special category seats completed by 28 February. Final list of admitted students made public by 28 February; verified list sent to PM&DC within sixty days
The four closing deadlines, for MBBS and BDS.
ProgrammeOpen merit seatsSpecial category seats
MBBSBy 31 DecemberBy 10 January
BDSBefore 15 FebruaryBy 28 February

"Special category" means seats that are not open merit, such as Merged Districts, backward area, minority and special ability seats.

Step 11: Final list and verification

The final list of admitted students is made public by 28 February. After that, the affiliated university verifies it and submits it to PM&DC through its online portal “within sixty days of the completion of the admissions.” Each college must also verify its students' Matric and HSSC credentials and send a certificate to KMU within 30 days after admissions are complete. Admissions remain provisional: documents can be checked at any stage of the degree.

Step 12: Classes begin

The policy says “Date for the commencement of classes shall be notified by the admitting university (KMU).” When it is announced, join on time. A first-year student who is continuously absent for four weeks from the start of the session without a valid reason is struck off the college roll, and the seat goes to the waiting list.

Categories that follow their own schedule

Some seats are not filled from KMU's own merit lists. Other bodies nominate candidates for them, so their timelines depend on those agencies. The policy says candidates sent by nominating agencies after admissions close are admitted “subject to prior approval of PM&DC”.

Selected AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan candidates must report to the principal of their KP college before the closing date of admission. For more on these seats, see our guides to AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan seats, Merged Districts seats and foreign and overseas Pakistani seats.

Appeals: who decides and how fast

If you disagree with an admission decision, the policy sets out a clear ladder, and the last step has a tight deadline.

KMU admission appeal ladder. Step 1: KMU Admission Committee decides all admission cases. Step 2: complaints against its decisions go to the Appellate KMU Admission Committee, chaired by the Vice Chancellor. Step 3: a review against the appellate decision can be filed before the Chairman of the Provincial Admission Committee within three working days after the final selection, and the PAC's decision is final. Merged Districts seats: appeals to the appellate committee and the MDs Secretariat. Special ability seats: appeal against the Medical Board to the Chairman PAC
Three levels of appeal. The last one must be filed within three working days.
  1. KMU Admission Committee (KMU-AC) decides all cases related to admission.
  2. Appellate KMU Admission Committee, chaired by KMU's Vice Chancellor, hears complaints against KMU-AC's decisions.
  3. Chairman, Provincial Admission Committee (PAC). A review against the Appellate Committee's decision “can be filed before the chairman PAC within 03 working days after the final selection. The decision of the PAC shall stand final.”

Two categories have their own route. For Merged Districts seats, appeals go to the appellate committee, and the policy says the right of appeal in the MDs admission process “shall vest in the MDs Secretariat”. For seats for persons with special abilities, candidates can appeal against the KMU Medical Board's decision to the Chairman PAC, whose decision is final. Write every objection and appeal clearly, keep a copy, and file it the same day if you can.

What happens to seats left empty at the end

If a seat in any category is still empty after admissions are complete and no eligible candidate is left, it becomes an open merit seat. The exception is foreign self-finance seats, which become general self-finance seats. The policy also says no institution may make admissions against dropped-out or vacant seats on its own. Every seat goes through KMU's process.

Frequently asked questions

When does KMU admission open for MBBS and BDS?

KMU opens admissions after the MDCAT result, through an advertisement in national newspapers, on its website and on its Facebook page. The exact dates change every year. The policy only fixes that criteria and seat categories are announced by 1 August, and that admissions must close by 31 December (open merit MBBS), 10 January (special category MBBS), 15 February (open merit BDS) and 28 February (special category BDS).

How many merit lists does KMU display?

At least three consecutive merit lists. Seats left empty because selected candidates did not pay go to the next candidates on merit, and candidates can be upgraded to a higher-preference college in later lists.

How many days do I get to pay the fee after selection?

Three working days from your admission offer letter. If you miss it, your admission is cancelled and the seat goes to the next candidate. If you are later upgraded, the fee you already paid moves to the new college without any deduction.

Can I apply to KMU after the last date?

No. The policy says no admission form will be accepted after the due date. Certificates issued after the closing date are not considered either.

What is the last date of BDS admission at KMU?

Admissions to public sector dental colleges must be completed before 15 February. Special category BDS seats, such as Merged Districts or backward area seats, must be completed by 28 February.

When do MBBS classes start at KMU colleges?

KMU notifies the date when classes start each year. Join on time: a first-year student absent for four continuous weeks from the start of the session without a valid reason is struck off the roll.

How do I appeal a KMU admission decision?

Complaints against KMU-AC's decisions go to the Appellate KMU Admission Committee. A review against the appellate decision can be filed before the Chairman of the Provincial Admission Committee within three working days after the final selection, and the PAC's decision is final.

Is my MDCAT result valid for more than one year?

Yes. KMU's policy says an MDCAT result from any province is valid for the entire country for three years.

Stay a step ahead of the schedule

The students who get the seats they want are rarely the ones who find out about a deadline on the day. They have their documents ready, their aggregate worked out and their college list decided before KMU's advertisement appears. If your MDCAT is still ahead of you, start preparing with ePrepare. A few extra MDCAT marks move you up the merit list more than anything else in this process.
