Of all the documents on your KMU admission list, the migration certificate is the one students most often forget. Unlike your DMCs and domicile, it is not something you already have at home. You have to get it from your board. The good news: it is cheap, it usually takes about an hour, and right now, while you are waiting for merit lists, you have the free time to do it.
This guide explains what the board migration certificate is, why KMU needs it, exactly what to write on the form, what it costs, and what to do if you already made one for another university.
The short answer: go to the board you passed FSc from with photocopies of your FSc DMC and matric documents, and ask for a migration certificate from "Board to KMU" (Khyber Medical University). Write the university's name, not your college's. It costs around Rs 300 to 500 at most boards (budget up to about Rs 1,000) and is usually ready the same day. It is mandatory: you cannot sit your professional exams without it.
What a migration certificate is, and why KMU needs it
When you passed FSc, you were registered with your Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE). A migration certificate is the board's permission for your registration to move from the board to a university. For MBBS and BDS in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's public colleges, that university is Khyber Medical University (KMU), which conducts your professional exams.
KMU's admission policy lists it among the required documents:
"Migration Certificate from the respective board (only from admitted candidates to be submitted at respective college where admission is offered)"
So you need it once you are admitted, and you hand it to your college with your other documents. Your college keeps the original for the length of your degree. See our college admission documents and attestation guide for the full list.
What happens if you do not have it on reporting day?
Colleges usually give you some time. It is not a reason to lose your seat on the first day. But it is mandatory: without it, you are not allowed to sit your professional (Prof) exams. Everyone has to get it sooner or later, and getting it later only adds stress when you are busy with classes. Get it now.
Where to get it
Get it from the board you passed FSc from, not your matric board if that is different, and not your college. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa these are the BISE boards of Peshawar, Mardan, Swat, Malakand, Abbottabad, Kohat, Bannu and Dera Ismail Khan. If you did FSc from another board, such as the Federal Board or a Punjab board, go to that board.
Some boards now offer the migration certificate online. Check your board's website first: it might save you the trip.
What to take with you
- A photocopy of your FSc DMC.
- A photocopy of your matric document (DMC or certificate).
That is usually all. Carry your CNIC or Form B and the originals as well, in case the counter asks to see them.
What to write: "Board to KMU"
This is the one detail students get wrong. On the form, the certificate is issued from your board to the university. Write Khyber Medical University (KMU). Do not write the name of your medical or dental college.
The reason is simple. Every public medical and dental college in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is affiliated with KMU, and KMU, not the college, registers you for your exams. So whether you end up at Khyber Medical College, Ayub, Saidu or any other KMU college, the certificate says "Board to KMU". This works even if you are later upgraded to a different KMU college.
Cost and time
- Fee: last year most boards charged around Rs 300 to 500. Some boards charge more, so as a rough estimate, keep up to about Rs 1,000 with you.
- Time: at most boards it is made the same day, usually within about an hour.
Fees and procedures change, so check your board's website or notice board before you go.
Already made a migration certificate for another university?
Some students already got a migration certificate last year, for example for a BS programme. A migration certificate names one specific university, such as "Board to Abdul Wali Khan University" or "Board to Khyber Medical University". So what happens now depends on your situation.
If this is your first migration certificate
Simple: go to your FSc board and get "Board to KMU".
If you already migrated to another university and registered there
Your registration has already moved from the board to that university. You have two options:
- University to university: get a migration from that university to KMU, through the university where you are registered.
- Back through the board: get proof from that university that your seat or registration there has been cancelled, and submit it to your board. The board can then issue a new certificate, "Board to KMU".
Do not go to the board empty-handed. Without proof of cancellation from the other university, the board will only give you a copy of your old certificate, made out to the university where you already migrated. The trip is wasted.
Planning to improve your FSc marks? Wait
Some students take a BDS seat or a self-finance MBBS seat this year while planning to improve their FSc marks and apply again for an open merit MBBS seat. If that is your plan, hold off on the migration certificate for now. It is still mandatory, but colleges usually allow time to submit it, and you can get it later, before your first professional exam. Our guide to KMU rules for improvers and repeaters explains how improved marks are treated.
For everyone else, our advice does not change: get it now, while you have the time.
Board migration vs college migration: not the same thing
Do not confuse this certificate with migrating from one medical college to another. That is a separate KMU process, allowed only after certain professional exams, with its own rules and fees. If that is what you are looking for, read our KMU migration policy guide and shifting vs migration at KMU.

No. Write the university: "Board to KMU" (Khyber Medical University). All public medical and dental colleges in KP are affiliated with KMU.

What documents do I need at the board?
A photocopy of your FSc DMC and of your matric document. Carry your CNIC or Form B and the originals in case they ask.
I already made a migration certificate for another university. What now?
