Many students lose sleep over the word "interview". They imagine a panel of doctors asking biology questions. The KMU placement interview for MBBS and BDS is nothing like that. Nobody quizzes you. It is a short meeting where KMU checks your original documents, shows you which colleges still have seats at your rank, and lets you pick one.

This guide walks you through the whole day, from the hall you sit in to the challan you leave with. It then explains the fee step that follows, because missing the fee deadline is the one mistake that can cost you a seat you have already won. Everything here comes from what our students went through last year and from KMU's latest admission policy.

The short answer: the KMU interview is a document check plus college selection, not a question-and-answer test. You are called by your rank on the final merit list, you choose a college from the seats still vacant, and you receive a call letter and a fee challan. You must then deposit the fee at the bank within three working days, or the seat goes to the next student on merit.

Six steps of the KMU MBBS and BDS interview day: final merit list sets your rank, you are called in a morning or evening shift, you wait in the Multipurpose Hall, groups of 20 go in roughly every 10 minutes, KMU checks your original documents, and you choose a college and receive a call letter and fee challan
The KMU interview day in six steps

What the KMU interview really is

KMU's policy calls it a "placement interview". The word placement says it all. KMU uses the meeting to place each student in a college on merit-cum-choice, which means two things decide where you go:

  • Merit: your rank on the final merit list. Students with a higher aggregate are called first and get first pick.
  • Choice: the colleges you listed as preferences on your online form. KMU only offers you a college that appears in your preference list.

So nobody asks you about the heart or the Krebs cycle. The staff look at your original documents, confirm they match what you uploaded, and ask which of the available colleges you want. It is mostly a formality, and it usually takes a few minutes per student.

One rule matters more than anything else: your interview rank is your rank on the final merit list. KMU displays the final merit list two days before interviews start, so check it carefully and note your exact position.

Where and when the interviews happen

Interviews are held at KMU in Peshawar, in the university's Multipurpose Hall. KMU calls candidates in order of aggregate, in two shifts a day:

  • Morning shift: usually about 200 candidates.
  • Evening shift: usually about 200 more.

That makes roughly 400 interviews a day. The next day continues with the next ranks, and so on. Last year, normal calls went up to about rank 1,200. After the later shifting rounds, the final closing rank reached about 1,700. These numbers change each year with the number of seats and how many students accept or refuse, so treat them as a rough guide. Our KMU closing merit page shows past closing aggregates college by college.

Do not miss your day. Go on the day and shift given for your rank. A student who does not appear when called is not offered admission in that round.

How the hall works on the day

When you arrive, find a seat in the hall and relax. The process is calm and orderly:

  1. A staff member comes to the hall roughly every 10 minutes and calls the next group by rank.
  2. Each group is about 20 students. You go into the interview room together.
  3. Inside, staff check each student's originals and record the college the student chooses from the seats still vacant.
  4. A group of 20 is usually done in about 10 minutes, then the next 20 are called.

Listen for your rank and keep your documents in one folder so you are not searching through a bag when your turn comes.

Choosing your college in the room

The staff will tell you which colleges still have vacant seats in your category at that moment. You pick one from that list. A few things to keep in mind:

  • Decide your order of preference before you go, so you are not deciding under pressure.
  • Seats fill as higher ranks choose before you. The college you wanted in the morning may be full by your turn.
  • Later merit lists can upgrade you to a college higher in your preference list when seats fall vacant. Under KMU's policy, the fee you already paid moves with you to the new college without any deduction. You cannot be moved down to a college you already refused. Our guide to KMU merit lists, upgrades and the waiting list explains this in detail.

Documents to take to the KMU interview

Carry originals. KMU checks the originals at the interview, and your college keeps them when you report later.

Documents for the KMU MBBS and BDS interview. Must carry: original CNIC or Form B, FSc DMC, domicile certificate and matric certificate. Take for safety: matric DMC, father's domicile, father's CNIC photocopy and the merit list fee receipt
Four documents you must carry, and four to take for safety

Must carry (open merit and self-finance)

  • Original CNIC or Form B. A CNIC is better. Some years KMU staff ask only for the CNIC, but they often check the DMCs too, so carry everything.
  • FSc DMC (detailed marks certificate).
  • Domicile certificate (your own).
  • Matric certificate.

Take these for safety

These are usually not checked at the interview, but it costs nothing to carry them and saves a trip if someone asks:

  • Matric DMC.
  • Father's domicile. If your father is not alive, carry your mother's domicile and your father's death certificate. If neither parent is available, carry your guardian's domicile with the father's death certificate.
  • Photocopy of your father's CNIC.
  • MBBS/BDS merit list fee receipt: the receipt you uploaded on the KMU portal when you applied.

For the full list of documents your college will ask for when you report, including attestation, see our guide to college admission documents and attestation.

Do you need your father or guardian with you?

This is where students hear two different answers, so here is the full picture:

  • KMU's admission policy says: "The parent(s) or legal guardians must accompany all the candidates at the time of placement interview."
  • In practice, our students last year found that KMU did not strictly check for a parent at the hall.
  • Some colleges are strict when you report for admission later, and will not accept your reporting without a guardian.

Our advice is simple: take your father or guardian with you. It matches the written policy and removes any risk.

If you truly cannot go yourself, students have sent a close blood relative such as a father or brother in their place. Going yourself is far better, because you can choose your own college and answer any question on the spot. If someone must go for you, make sure they carry all your originals and know your exact college preferences.

What you get at the interview: call letter and fee challan

Before you leave, KMU gives you two things:

  1. A call letter for the college you have been nominated to.
  2. A fee challan for your category. Open merit candidates get the open merit challan. Self-finance candidates get the self-finance challan.

Keep both safe. You will need the call letter and the paid challan when you report to your college.

Fee submission: the three-working-day rule

This is the step to take most seriously. KMU's policy is clear: all dues must be paid within three working days of the placement interview, unless the admission order gives a different date. If you do not pay in time, your admission is cancelled and the seat goes to the next candidate on merit. You keep no right to that seat that year.

KMU fee submission in five steps: receive the challan at the interview, deposit it at the Bank of Khyber within three working days, keep the student copy, upload the KMU copy on the KMU portal, and hand the college copy to your college when you report
From challan to college: what happens to each copy

What counts as a working day

Working days are the days banks and government offices are open: Monday to Friday. Saturday and Sunday do not count, and nor do public holidays.

For example, if your interview is on a Thursday, your three working days are usually Friday, Monday and Tuesday. Always check the last date printed on your challan, and do not leave it to the last day. Bank queues during admission week can be long.

Working-day example for the KMU fee deadline: interview on Thursday, then Friday is working day 1, Saturday and Sunday are off, Monday is working day 2 and Tuesday is working day 3, the last day to pay
Weekends do not count towards the three working days

Where to pay

Last year, the fee was deposited at the Bank of Khyber. If KMU changes the bank, the new bank's name will be printed on your challan, so follow the challan.

The three copies of the challan

  • Student copy: you keep this one, permanently.
  • KMU copy: upload a scan of it on the KMU admission portal, in the fee deposit section. The portal shows the exact place to upload it.
  • College copy: your college takes this when you report for admission.

How much is the fee, and can you pay in instalments?

PointOpen meritSelf-finance
Challan at the interviewRoughly Rs 62,000 to 75,000, depending on the college (last year)The full self-finance challan for your college
InstalmentsOne challanNot allowed: pay the whole amount at once
DeadlineThree working daysUsually the same; self-finance candidates have sometimes been given a day or two more, so follow the date on your challan

For KMU's full yearly fee schedule for every college and seat type, see our KMU MBBS and BDS fee structure. If you are still deciding between the two seat types, read self-finance vs open merit at KMU.

Before you pay, know the refund rule. KMU's policy says fee once paid is not refunded if you later leave for a college in another province or country, and fee is never refunded if an admission is cancelled because of forged documents. Pay only for the seat you mean to keep.

After the fee: reporting to your college

Once your fee is deposited, the next step is to report to your college with your call letter, the paid challan and your documents. Colleges announce their own reporting dates. These are often later than the fee deadline, because KMU's shifting and upgrade rounds are still running. That is normal. The fee has a hard deadline; reporting follows the college's own notice.

Our college admission documents and attestation guide covers exactly what to take, how to attest copies and what the college keeps.
